Hyperpigmentation is a condition where certain parts of the body is covered with dark patches or spots due to overproduction and deposition of melanin, a chemical produced by the body to naturally protect the skin from harmful UV rays. It usually occurs in the visible parts of the body like face, arms and hands.

Hyperpigmentation occurs due to various reasons and therefore, to get rid of it effectively, determining the causes is of foremost importance. The types of hyperpigmentation ranges from lentigines, also known as age spots or liver spots which occur mostly in aged people to melasma which is a type caused by changes in hormones. Though hyperpigmentation is not exactly harmful, it tends to worry many people for the blemish it leaves on the skin. Therefore, medical researchers have come up with various methods of treatment for this skin condition. Photofacial, laser peel, chemical peel are some of the potent methods to treat hyperpigmentation. However, utmost care should be taken while administering these methods as improper treatment can make the situation worse. Skin lightening products which help reduce skin discoloration are also readily available in the market.One might also opt for a microdermabrasion treatment in a salon. Moreover, home remedies such as lemon juice, aloe vera, cucumber, rose hip oil etc. are said to help reduce hyperpigmentation. Besides these, limiting exposure to sun, taking medication, choosing medicines and skin treatments wisely can immensely control further pigmentation of the skin and help people flaunt their original skin colour.
