Information about Trans-catheter Pulmonary Valve

A valve, the pulmonary valve, located between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery i.e. the artery that carries oxygenated blood to the lungs opens and closes thereby aiding in the transfer of blood from the ventricles to the arteries.  But in some people, the pulmonary valve becomes dysfunctional either due to a defect that is present at birth or due to some other factors that lead to a damage to the valve. In such cases, the dysfunctional valve needs to be replaced with a new one to ensure the proper functioning of the heart. Most of the times, the dysfunctional valve is replaced with anartificial pulmonary valve.

The transcatheter pulmonary valve is a valve that is replaced in the patient via the trancatheter pulmonary valve therapy. This is a process that involves the use of a catheter to replace the valve. How it works is that a catheter i.e. a thin tube is inserted into a vein which acts as a path to the heart. The catheter is pushed through the vein to the heart. At the end which is inside the heart of the catheter, a new specialized valve is attached. This valve is generally obtained from a valve in a cow’s vein. Once the end of the catheter reaches the dysfunctional pulmonary valve, the old dysfunctional valve is removed and the new one is placed there.

Presently, there are two types of transcatheter pulmonary valves developed, Melody valve and the Edwards SapienTranscatheter pulmonary valve. The difference between the two valves is not very vast and both are taken from a cow. The process is a bit different.

The transcatheter pulmonary valves are deemed to be a better treatment since they have the capability of replacing the open heart surgery. According to researchers, open heart surgery is extremely risky and the chances of the patient dying during the surgery are high. Even though, not completely void of risk, transcatheter pulmonary valve therapy might be less risky than the open heart surgery.
