What are Pupillometers?

Pupilometers are 2 different devices which are used in ophthalmology — one measures the distance between pupils, and the other measures the response of pupil to visual stimuli.  

Pupillary distance measurement

The pupilometer is used for measuring pupillary distance (PD) for fitting eye glasses so that the lenses are centered in visual axis. There are many ways of measuring one's pupil distance. Usually a ruler is used by optometrists. Video centration devices are used these days which provides higher accuracy. The accuracy is required for progressive lenses in which small deviations may reduce the performance of the lens by a large extent.

Pupil response

Pupilometer is also used for measuring the amount of dilation of pupil in response to visual stimulus. The response of pupil to light is different from response of pupil to focus, e.g.  Argyll Robertson pupil in tertiary syphilis.

How much the pupil is dilating could be a way to gauge the attention and interest of the subject. The extent of dilation and constriction of pupils is used in researches of marketing and applied to make TV commercials, serials, movies etc more attractive. Dilation of pupils also shows an increase in mental process.
