What is neuroendovascular coiling?

An aneurysm is the dilation of blood vessel making it weak and more vulnerable towards rupture. It is caused due to old age, high blood pressure, consumption of alcohol, head injuries, smoking, drug abuse, low estrogen levels and blood infections. An aneurysm might be the reason for stroke or subarachnoid haemorrhage which might even prove fatal. Considering the complexities of aneurysm and the health hazards associated with it, neuroendovascular coiling is a method invented to seal the aneurysm and prevent it from rupture.  It prevents blood flow by clotting it and reducing the pressure it exerts on its outer wall, and thereby, aid in sealing the aneurysm.

Neuroendovascular coiling is performed by using small and thin, spring-shaped coils made with soft platinum attached to a micro catheter. Before the surgery, the patient is administered with general anaesthesia. After that, the micro catheter is inserted through an incisionand fluoroscopy is used as a guide to the location of the aneurysm. Once reached, the micro catheter is inserted into the aneurysm and the coil seals it.Then, it is separated from the coil using an electric signal, leaving the coil permanently in the aneurysm and sealing it. In certain cases where the size of the aneurysm is large, more than one coil is required.

Post-surgery, the patient is usually deemed fit to carry on his daily activities within two days. However, in certain cases, he is advised to follow certain instructions as per the recommendation of the surgeon.

In some cases of aneurysm, an open surgery is conducted instead of neuroendovascular coiling, depending on the size, shape, location and condition (ruptured or unruptured) of the aneurysm. Though both the methods of treatment are found effective, it must be mentioned that the risk of death in case of neuroendovascular coiling is 22.6 percent times lower than that associated with open surgery.
